Terri Patterson-
When my son Kevin was in high school, at one point he shared with me some big doubts he was having about Christianity. Of course his questions worried me to no end. But when I related them to Jake, he assured me that Kevin’s doubting was a “good thing” because it showed that he was actually thinking. I didn’t really believe those doubts were “good”—but I also knew that Jake would help my son navigate through his questions. Thanks to the youth leaders (Jake, Jared, Adam, Scott, and others), Kevin worked through his time of doubting and came out on the other side with a stronger faith. Even now, he and Jake are in contact throughout each week, and Jake has graciously helped him with some preparation for Bible studies.
This once-doubtful young man is now a sophomore in college. Even though he’s on a secular campus, he is involved in a campus ministry, is going on a mission trip over spring break, is co-leading a Bible study on campus, and will be helping with Big Stuf trip this summer. I told Jake that Kevin’s faith is part of his legacy. How important it is that when our young people do have doubts, they also have strong youth leaders to gently guide them along the way!
Thank you for your leadership at Hope and being willing to discuss really hard stuff. I look forward to these next two weeks!
